Remote Monitoring System - Walton, KY
With the majority of today's ITS projects being focused on the main roads like highways and tool roads there are an increasing number of errant offences on the side roads which would justify some sort of enforcement. In Walton, KY on Route 25, CRS installed a remote monitoring system which tracks vehicles attempting to bypass the weigh station.
The system uses a camera to capture images of any vehicles over a certain height and then transmits the data back tot he weigh station for personnel to review and make a decision. Eight images are captured of each vehicle and the operator at the weigh station has only to wait a matter of seconds before all eight images are on the screen. To avoid wait time, a sound is issued whenever new images appear so the operator doesn't have to sit in front of the screen all day.
Four of the images are side images and using the review software's controls, the operator can read the USDOT or ICC number of the vehicle. This number is then entered in the States database and any outstanding warrants will show up. An enforcement officer can then be dispatched to intercept the vehicle when it attempts to reenter the Interstate system.
The system allows officers to make more use of their time since they only have to go out when a potential problem is identified. The system operates 24/7/365 so truckers are always on the alert as they never know when the weigh station is being monitored.
